Legionnaires’ Disease is a form of
Pneumonia caused by the bacterium Legionella Pneumophila. This disease can
often be fatal. Infection occurs as a result of inhalation of water
droplets containing the bacterium. The water droplets must be in the form
of an aerosol/ mist which can be generated from the following systems;
COOLING TOWERS (AIR CONDITIONING)
WHIRLPOOL SPAS (JACUZZIS)
HOT & COLD WATER SERVICES
SHOWERS
IRRIGATION SYSTEMS
AND. NUMEROUS OTHER SYSTEMS
The Health and Safety Executive have
published a document entitled Legionnaires’ Disease the Control of Bacteria
in Water Systems (ACOP (L8), which provides guidance to identify, manage
and control the risks.
